Baris and Sheldon won the common doubles bid, and Baris also won the common singles bid.

MSU will send representatives to the NCAA men’s tennis tournament for the first time since 2015, when the current Spartans head coach harry jardon And doubles partner John Patrick Mullan made a historic run to the national semifinals, becoming the first All-American doubles team in program history.

Baris is the first Spartan to win an NCAA singles title since Nick Rinks in 2007 and the first rookie since Alberto Brause in 1996.

The NCAA Tournament singles and doubles events will be held May 22-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, followed by team championships. The first round of singles is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 22, while the doubles will begin on Tuesday, May 23. Pairings will be announced at a later date.

Baris and Sheldon combined to excel in the No. 1 tag team rankings, going 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the doubles season. The pair are 5-1 against ranked doubles teams in the spring and trail only No. 7 Michigan Andrew Fenty and Gavin Young in a top-10 matchup in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Barris and Shelton are currently ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) doubles rankings and hit a season high of sixth on April 4, the highest ranking for a Spartan doubles team in program history .

Barris, a Big Ten rookie of the year in 2023, has a 22-16 overall record in singles and a 10-11 record in doubles, including a league record of 5-4. The rookie played No. 1 in singles in every game in the spring and has a total of 11 knockouts against top-ranked opponents throughout the 2022-23 season. Barris entered his collegiate career as a blue-chip recruit from TennisRecruiting.net and won the U.S. Open junior doubles title on Sept. 10, 2022 with current Stanford freshman Nishesh Basawadi.

Barris has been gaining a place in the ITA singles rankings every week this spring, reaching a season-high of No. 26 for three consecutive weeks in January and currently sits at No. 49.

All games in the NCAA singles and doubles tournaments are best-of-three games. Ad-free scoring and 7-point tiebreaker (7 points must be won) for six games – all games will be used. In doubles matches, a 10-point tiebreaker will replace the third set.
